Project Proposal

In our country the education of children with mental handicap is still regarded as low priority (the reason is the fact that special schools are funded by the Ministry of Social Welfare, rather than the Ministry of Education - as are all other schools for children). As a result, the educational curriculum is arbitrary and fragmented, with each institution adopting a syllabus that it thinks is the best or the most appropriate. There are no guidelines and there is no system of accreditation.

We intend to document a systematic presentation of academic goals according to age and level of impairment, put forth a replicable method of teaching strategies and techniques using principles of learning from variety of medium. This goal has been a part of this educational institution since its inception. The powerful impact the technique has had on a majority of the students shows the need to systematically work on its syllabus, structure and content and make it available to others in the field.

The first phase: Complete. Academic work carried out at "Prabhat"and vocational training are the basis. Infrastructure for the development of this system is in place. Model is proven. The second phase: Detailed documentation of the underlying structure that is operational, taking into account scientifically based sampling procedures. The third phase: Train a select group of special educators from other institutions in the technique. Thereafter monitor the children they teach to examine the quantum of change achieved with the new technique. The fourth phase: Printing and publishing of training material, conducting workshops for special educators and parents for the adoption of this syllabus and teaching technique.
