On Thanksgiving Day (Nov 23), I will be running the ATLANTA HALF-MARATHON! This is the first big run that I’ve ever participated in and I am very excited. I started training for this race starting in July and since then I’ve been running 4-5 times a week with my long runs on the weekends. The reason why I am spending many hours to train and run this half marathon is to raise money for an organization called ASHA for Education. It is a non-profit organization which sets up educational programs for underprivileged children in India. One project that my marathon team is helping to fund is called the “Door Step School” in the Pune District of Maharashtra in Western India. More specifically it is located in Laman Tanda, a slum which has a great concentration of Lamani people. The drop-out rate for children is extremely high, of which teenage girls are of the greatest concern. Door Step School has been holding classes in a local school building for two years with a focus on providing non-formal education to children from this slum. Their purpose is to provide education during times which are more suitable for these children by taking into account important time constraints like the chores which they must perform at home. They specifically provide education for children in Laman Tanda who:
a)do not attend school
b)drop out early
c)have low learning levels.
This is only one example of projects that the Atlanta chapter of ASHA supports. More than 6 different projects are currently being supported by our chapter.
I am grateful for this opportunity to be apart of this fundraising effort to raise money for ASHA for Education. This non-governmental organization does amazing work in India, through funding and establishing hundreds of projects. If you would like to partner with this organization and to support Laman Tanda or ASHA's other projects around the country, you can donate very easily online using a credit card.
If you prefer not to donate online, feel free to e-mail me at emwong@emory.edu and we can work something out. 100% of the money donated is tax deductible and will go straight to ASHA projects in India.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me anytime.
Running History
Before training for this half marathon, I could only run 2-3 miles in one stretch.
