Running History
When I started out I couldnt make it beyond a mile. We started training in the middle of July. Thanks to encouraging words from my team and the coach and their good advice I'm able to run longer. I have cumulatively run more than 50 miles. My target this year is to complete the half marathon. My special thanks to Sriram for his encouraging words for the past 5 months.
Why Asha?
When we all think about what has gotten us this far in our career, invariably the answer turns out to be the Education we have received. I believe that with good education we can bring about a much needed socio-economic change in our society. Asha strives to produce the same by concentrating on provding basic education to the underpriviledged of our country. Our current literacy rate stands at 65%. Though we have done a good job of coming this far from 12% in 1947, we still have a long way to go. The number of illiterates stands at a whopping 300+ Million (which is more than the entire population of the US). We lag even behind many African countries such as Namibia, Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda in terms of literacy rate.
Asha is run 100% by volunteers. There is zero overhead and every penny donated actually benefits the people. Asha volunteers keep track of projects and evaluate them with site visits every few months to make sure the funds are used in the right way. Asha supports a lot of projects and you can also choose the project that gets your $$$.
