About the event
"Ganga: a River's Story" is a thematic, modern Indian dance drama told through the eyes of the boatman who navigates the waters of the Ganges every day. It is a tale of life, lore, and legend, and artistically retells the history of the river and portrays the lives of the people she touches.
The Ganges River, eternal and vibrant, has sustained and nourished generations. This majestic body of water holds an important place in Sikh, Buddhist, and Hindu lore, where she is personified as the Goddess Ganga. Bathing in her waters is said to forgive one's sins and help the soul reach moksha, or emancipation from rebirth. The Buddha reached enlightenment on her shores. The monk Shankaracharya meditated by this river. And to the sage Kabir, Ganga was like his own mother. An ancient Indian legend recalls Ganga's tumultuous descent from Heaven in response to the penance of Bhageeratha, and how the wild river was subsequently tamed by Lord Shiva and captured in Jata, the wild locks of his hair.
A timeless production, choreographed by the renowned duo Anusha and Narendra Kumar of Anusham Dance in Chennai, and set to original music in Hindi with English narration, Ganga: a River's Story" captures the essence of Ganga and her role in shaping Indian history and life.
