The Calendar Story

- Sanjeev Ranganathan

Getting the Asha-Bangalore calendars done at Sita school has been interesting as it has given some idea of the activities of the school itself. The first attempt at the calendars were based of activities of the school. Jane showed me the pictures. It included yoga, gardening, computers, water collecting, pond with fishes, stitching, learning to use the sun-dial, dancing, playing, drawing, meditation. It appeared that the pictures were too static and required too many colors to make dynamic.

The next effort was for the children to make a story and use the story as a calendar. One story is shown here in which the child is hungry and has no money so goes into the forest to find food, finds a necklace instead, gives it to the police and gets a reward that is used to food from the market.

The children were really enjoying this and they extended it to workshop making stories by giving children common-place objects to choose from. The children took the objects and made stories. Some of these are shown below. A particularly touching one was of a cow that needed glasses. It was made by the boy who himself is having difficulty reading. It appears the children are themselves able to express themselves when given solid objects.

The next attempt was based on the theme of the garden. The children drew pictures and borders. Here are many of the pictures. Some of which were used for the calendar.

The screen printing is very interesting and very close to the process of making semiconductor chips. It is based of photo-lithography. Screen are made from exposing photoresist material to the image and this is then used for screen printing.
Jane later sent me some pictures of the making of the calendars:
