Sita School Calendars

October 2009 Anita Komanduri
The calendars made by Sita School are here, the theme being physical activity in the school. This was inspired by Santhosh and Preeti's work there on physical education esp running and health. The pictures show various physical activities the children do at school - cleaning, running, stretching, surya namaskar etc.
Anjali, Jane's daughter, designed the calendar this year. And Printo helped out with the screens. The screen printing work was spread over a few weekends. I volunteered for a couple of days. On the first day, Santhosh had organized a Team Asha and Runners High run there and some folks had stayed back to help. Older children and children who had graduated from the school were there to help.  We were the assembly line :)

All the jobs were well defined. Person 1 picked up fresh sheet and handed it to P2 who placed it neatly under the screen and shut it. P3 (almost always Anjali) pulled the squeegee over the screen. P4 pulled it out and gave it to P5 who looked at it and pointed out printing errors if any (the paint is dull in such-and-such corner and such). From P6 onwards, the line could absorb as many people as there were, since from here on the job was to hand over the sheet carefully till it was put in its place to dry. One would occasionally hear folks from this gang talking about smudges, following which everyone would look at their fingers to see who had the wet paint. I don't think we ever found the folks with the wet paint!

Quite a bit of effort went into making the calendar and everyone in the school had contributed in some way. The calendars are on sale for Rs 200 a piece. The proceeds from the calendar sales will go into a higher education fund for the older children once they graduate from Sita School.
