Minutes for Asha Berkeley 3/9/08

1.Introductions (Puneet, Chinmay, Amit, Ann, Sangita, Lakshmi, Milla, Digvijay, Bala, Shashin)

2.Ping Pong Celebrity Event (Shashin)

  • Celebrities: Raj Mathai, Yau-man Chan, Mohini Bhardwaj, Sania Mirza?, Steve Westley
  • Expenses: $200 for roundtrip and hotel to bring Mohini Bhardwaj from Southern California
  • Expected Revenue: charge $50-$100 to play one game to 11 with each celebrity. Event lasts 3 hour with four celebrities. Which means $1,200 - $2,400. We can also sell or auction autographed items. Sponsorships is another potential source of revenue.
  • Shashin's Tasks: recruit celebrities and handle media coverage
  • Asha's Tasks: find sponsors
  • Suggestions:
    • Reach out to people outside the Indian community
    • Contact Cal Ping Pong Tea,
    • Find possible donors through ICC Database
    • It would be helpful to have a write up of media sources and contacts
    • Contact Previous Asha Donors
    • Send Sponsorship Packets

3.Child Rights Trust (Foster) – educates children of their rights (Bangalore)

  • Rights include: Right to Development, Gender Equality, Right to Education, etc.
  • Project was approved in 2005 and it got FCRA clearance in Dec. 2007.
  • Cofounder: Padmini (retired from Unicef)
  • 2006-2007: legislative action is being taken and other NGOs have gotten involved
  • CRT was given responsibility to set up helpline for children and women

4.Parijat Academy – Assam (Digvijay)

  • Budget
    • Salary for Cook Rs 12, 000 (Rs. 1000 monthly)
    • Books/ writing materials Rs. 67000 (Rs. 350 per child)
    • Desk and bench – 30 pairs Rs. 36,000 (Rs 1200 per pair)
    • Total: $3,000
  • Suggestions
    • Should we supply books at the start of the Academic year?
    • Contact Asha Seattle because Parijat only has FCRA clearance for that chapter
