2. Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) Project update – Nandini

Background

    * KGBV is an education program for girls.
    * Residential school (3 years of schooling – VI, VII, VIII done in a year)
    * HRD ministry has approved many schools under the SSA (Sarva Shikshan Abhiyan) in India and out of which 125 are in UP.
    * NGO Mahila Samaj (MS) is running 10 schools in UP (buildings are rented)
    * Initially, HRD ministry approved 20 lakhs for construction, 6 lakhs for kitchen, and 20 lakhs for operational cost (per school).
    * But each school need additional 15 lakhs
    * MS approached Asha. Project proposal was approved and Asha was supporting the additional 15 lakhs. Other chapters are also involved.
    * Berkeley chapter approved $5000 for the project.

Project Update

    * Recently, MHRD approved additional 15 lakhs/school. And now, construction is being done for 15 schools operated by MS (now, MS is running 15 schools).
    * So, what we do with the approved budget of $5000?
    * Other chapters are holding their respective amount.
    * Current proposal being discussed is for Asha to take the next step by providing books and computers, vocational training, building science labs, and other similar ideas.
    * Chapter decided to hold the money, and look into other projects that we can support now.

3. Prachi Academy, Orissa – Bala

    * Prachi Academy is in need of project steward.
    * Puneet volunteered to be the project steward for this project.
