Awantika Vidya Bhawan is a K-8 school run by the ARPAN Society, an NGO based in Bhopal, MP. The school imparts formal education to ~150 students from four villages within an 8 mile radius ~30km from Bhopal. Students are from poor families and are mostly the children of farmers and laborers. Most of these children would otherwise not attend school, as the local government schools are in poor condition and their families cannot afford private schools.
The school provides:
A supportive atmosphere with qualified and caring teachers
Free school lunch to all students
Free transportation to and from school (without transportation students would have to walk several miles to and from school)
Medical Care (a doctor visits the school once a week to perform check-ups on the students)
Project Steward: Kamal Kapadia, Hemang Kapasi This Education Centre will work with tribal children who currently have little or no access to schools. Aseema believe in a holistic approach to education and plan to cover everything from basic literacy to analytical and emotional skills, physical wellbeing and vocational training. Project Stewards: Pooja Jain, Jayanth Kannan The school serves the children of musahar community with ages from 3-10 whose parents are below the poverty line. The parents of mushar communities are laborers who work in brick laying business and also rear pigs. The children usually carry payload helping their parents. Project Steward: Barnali Ghosh Sahyog School Without Walls is the oldest program of Sahyog. Established in June 2000, this is a community-based school for out-of-school adolescent girls. It uses a learning-through-doing methodology, through which in addition to classroom teaching, girls are involved in community work, action research, and mapping. The primary aim of Sahyog is to give these girls confidence in themselves and develop their capacity for critical thinking. In addition, Asha supports Sahyog Ekta, a community based health program through which access to basic health services are provided. Project Steward: Sangita Dandekar Sahyog conducts non-formal education for 3 kinds of children. There are pre-school kids who go to a balwadi, there are school dropouts, and school going kids. In addition to the regular education, a lot of emphasis is placed on the power of play to help heal the children, many of whom have been witness to horrifying scenes. Project Steward: Anand Raghavan and Anitha Sivasankaran Sevalaya is an established non-profit organization, that has been working in the Kasuva village area for over 19 years to provide absolutely free education - including books and uniforms - to economically disadvantaged children whose families cannot even afford to send them to Government schools. Sevalaya also runs an orphanage, old age home, medical facility, library and a goshala (cow shelter) for the community. Asha is providing Sevalaya with funds to buy and distrbute notebooks for 1000 children. Asha Berkeley is the stewarding chapter, and Asha Silicon Valley is funding the project through the Inter Chapter Funding Process. Project Steward: Chirag Wighe The project provides basic education to the children of poor people living in the kishangarh slum area. The school has two sections. Morning section to provide basic education from Nursery to class I. Evening section for class I to X and also computer classes. Project steward: Sandipan Mishra
Project Steward: Bala Pesala The Asha School run by WAYSSS was started to get child labourers in the nearby quarry back into school. Most of the residents are poor Muslims who are farmers or employed as daily laborers in quarry work. Currently, the school has 60 students. The following projects have been approved, and are awaiting FCRA clearance.
Project Steward: Foster Gonsalves The goal of this project is to develop awareness and understanding about CRC (Convention on the Rights of the Children) among school children and teachers in order to develop their capacity for participation in Child Rights Activism. This project reaches out to masses through radio plays and other material leading them into discussions on Child Rights.
Project steward: Gagan Bhatia
This project provides education for children of laborers in the outskirts of delhi. The parents are immigrant workers from neighboring states of delhi. The main aim to prepare students and get financial support to enroll them in government schools. |
