Support - A - Family 
 (Tsunami Rehabilitation)


Asha Chennai has launched a Support-A-Family project to raise funds for the Tsunami Rehabilitation work we have undertaken at Urur Kuppam and nearby Kuppam along the Chennai coastline. The donors may choose specific families that they wish to support. Note that though we intend to give different amounts to each families we intend to charge the same from each donor given that we do not know the exact need of each family ahead of time. Each donor will donate Rs 5000 or equivalent (US$ 115 at current exchange rate) towards sponsoring one family.

As a sponsor under the support a family program, you can sponsor any of the families supported by this project. As an SAF sponsor the following information/support would be provided to you by Asha-Chennai:

  1. All information about the family and the support provided by Asha in terms of their rehabilitation will be put up on the webpage.

  2. Once in April 2005 we will provide a report about the status of the family to the donors.


To sponsor a family please do one of the following:

  • Identify the specific family you would like to sponsor from the list of families.

  • Donate online using your credit card at our online donations page. Please identify the name of the child you wish to sponsor in the Comments field.

  • If you would like to pay by cheque send Email to Murthy Subramanyamurthy if you are in the US or to Lakshmi if you are in India for information on where to send the cheque.

Policies followed by Asha Chennai for the Rehabilitation

  1. The affected family members must come to us through our trusted group or known sources. Where available they must be listed in the first survey of these areas. This is the reason we are restricting it to the areas mentioned earlier in this proposal.

  2. The family must find rented accommodation of their choice at reasonable advance rent terms of a maximum of 5 months rent.

  3. The owner must come to receive the rent and give the details of address and location and sign the voucher. Where owners cannot come our volunteers will deliver the money and the get the voucher signed for receipt of money.

  4. Utensils, stove, dry ration, clothes etc. would be given in kind. We would give Rs 50 towards purchase of Kerosene.

  5. Volunteers will visit the families at the new addresses in the weekends that follow.

  6. Volunteers will once again visit the families in April to assess for ourselves the effect of our rehabilitation efforts for these families.
