Projects
Projects currently supported:
Last year you helped us raise over $6000 for this project in the Work An Hour campaign.
Based on the support we received, Asha Cincinnati is now stewarding this project. Our goal for 2010 is to make sure that the funding needs for this school are met - ensuring the continued education of the children of this sub-urban fishing community.
1. Vasista Mithila Vidyalayam: Andhra Pradesh
This school - in Magamarripeta, rural suburb of Visakhapatnam, AP - supports the educational needs of the relocated/displaced fisherman community children. This is being supported by Asha Cincinnati since 2007. The project funding provides school supplies, uniforms and mid-day meals to about 150 students. The project budget also supports the livelihood of the teaching and a couple of non-teaching staff. Most of the members come from the neighbouring villages and so this school takes every opportunity to reach out to the local community by involving the parents and the village leaders to ensure that the benefits of education are supported by the families.
More details of this project can be found on the project website including the budget proposals, site visit reports and photos of the class rooms and students. Please write to us if you have any questions.

The children supported by this home are often orphans from various rural parts of the state. The children attend various schools in the neighborhood. Asha support the educational costs for these children in addition to their basic needs. Additional details will be made available soon on the project web site. Vidiyal - Non-Formal Education for Working Children : Tamil Nadu
This orphanage / non-formal education center provides a home and also functions as an educational facility for working children. These children in the age of 5 to 15 years, earn their living by working in various local businesses. They usually use the place of business as their home and are exploited byt their employeers. By providing a facility to shelter these children and providing some education, the intent is to provide a bridge so that they can get enrolled in schools or provide better vocational training (for the elder children) so they become self sufficient. Additional details are available on the project web site.
Asha Cincinnati was stewarding this project with local support from Asha Chennai. Due to continued challenges with the project partner and lack of local support, this project has been discontinued.
MG School: Karnataka
In 1991, the Mahatma Gandhi Residential High School was started to
cater to those boys who discontinued school after their 7th class to go and
work in hotels, etc.
The group aims to continue the work at the school.
It also aims to promote programmes relating to women's health and other
community development activities.
TRY: Tamilnadu
Started in 1996 as a non profit organization by some people from the
Madras school of social work. The first interest was community field
work, and to educate via distribution of information. During this effort,
they realized that children of commercial sex workers did not have any
opportunities to develop themselves. There were no services aimed at
these children. Thus, this organization decided to do something for the
betterment of these children.
Proposal forwarded by AID Cincinnati and currently being funded by Asha
- MIT/Boston.
