RUNNER RESOURCES
A marathon is the longest and most physically challenging run most runners will ever attempt. The key to running a successful marathon is proper training and nutrition. Our coaches have put together a weekly schedule and other guidance in a runner's manual, which addresses these issues. You, the runner, must make the commitment to follow these guidelines.
Our support group of coaches and peer runners, and our many helpful volunteers, provide a motivating environment that has helped our runners achieve their marathon goals successfully. In the four years our program in DC has existed, every runner who has started the race has finished. That's an amazing testimony to the commitment of our runners and the effectiveness of our training and support packages!
Here are some additional online resources on training topics, schedules, running philosophy and much more.
The first thing you'll need of course is a shoe. Although this is an obvious requirement, many new runners do not realize the importance of getting NEW shoes periodically. ;)
As you get accustomed to a regular running schedule, track your mileage and buy new shoes every 400-600 miles. But don't make the common rookie mistake of changing shoes JUST BEFORE the big marathon. Ouch! ;(
Here is a link to some popular running stores in the Washington DC area. You can find most of the running accessories you'll need at these stores.
Our runner's manual is one-stop shopping for everything you need to know from marathon history, to training and nutrition tips, as well as fund-raising pointers and sample letters to potential donors. Please check it out!
If you need running partners for days when TeamAsha is not scheduled to meet, you may want to investigate some of these running clubs in the DC area. You'll find some experienced runners to run with at these clubs, and may get some invaluable tips about all aspects of training and competing.
For the stats junkies, here are some ways to scientifically monitor you progress and performance.
