The objective of this project was to construct a Hearing Aid room in ASTITVA, a school for mentally sub-normal, deaf and mute children in Mumbai. The funds required for this project ($3802, one-time) were fully pledged by a group of students who graduated from IIT Bombay in 1984.

Objectives of the organisation/group.

Education and Rehabilitation through school and workshop for Mentally Sub-normal, Deaf and Mute Children. Also, to provide for a Hostel for Mentally Sub-normal Children. (Mentally Sub-normal children were earlier known as mentally handicapped or mentally retarded children).

Some background:
Indian Govt had passed two important legislation covering various types of handicapped (or sub-normal) individuals.
                    a. Rehabilitation Council of India Act, 1992.
                    b. The Persons with Disabilities (equal opportunity, protection of rights, and full participation) Act, 1995.

Thereafter, it is the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi along with various State Govt.'s Welfare Depts. which have been making efforts in this direction. RCI now  requires mandatory registrations for Licences for Teachers in this profession. Licenses for Schools for such sub-normal individuals. Licenses for Teachers' Training Schools.

While Astitva was formed in 1981 (much before the Acts came into force), it fulfils all the necessary requirements in this regard. Teachers are specially trained for teaching Mentally Sub-normal (MS) Children, Deaf and Mute (D&M) Children. They have obtained their qualifications from the RCI/Govt. authorized institutions.
