IITR Visit report: 8 Samadhans were selected. Reached the IIT campus and was pleased to find that on the banner of Samadhan Asha was printed - with the logo. i reached at 13:30 or so and was shown around the campus by a Samadhan organiser. It was interesting to know his views on the reservation bill, for which there had been protests in the campus. I just asked him the same Q. Why not reservation - you guys are just looking for a brand and will go out or will do MBA in finanace. If you are capable enough you may go out without coming to IIT. And just posed the question - if you are so concerened about this quality - i think by now IITR s hould have been a model campus and Roorkee a model city. If you IITians have not been able to do that, don't crib. He had no counter to it. the presentations were to happen at 14:00 but as usual started at 14:45. The organisation abilities of students could have been better. It was then told that this is the first time that such a competition had happened. The presentations were as follows: 1. Rural youth - interesting presentation. But when asked when was the research done - 1999 it was. I just had to tell them that all this is now being done all over the place. I had jsut visited Mahilya Samhikya centre in Saharanpur - there they have incorporated local language, culture etc. I have heard that now even the school books (UP board or NCERT) are promoting creativity and scientific thinking.. 2. Two presentations on Kirana vs Wall mart - Not to well researched and some how sounded the same. 3. Women Safety - Harsha Shah - well presented but some basic Qs not answered. The counselling at home. 4. Water Shortage - looked promising. but only prototype will tell 5. Bio mass - no innovation just a business plan - one student is opting for implementing this in Braj region 6. Andaman Eco tourism - good inputs on andaman, but falls short of any innovation. 7. Student Awareness - no innovation or big bang, but from his perspective it was good. Over all:- the problems raised were the same and some one was asked to get it done. i could only figure out that we need better laws enforcement, better infrastructure, be able to respect environment, women, human life and implementation should be done well. Nothing new. Gave the participants the input that they should not be this theoritical and actually go and get some work done on ground. Met some good people there and suggested what we are planing to get done in IIT D with the NSS hours. I think that if Asha Delhi can get something done wtih NSS students, there is a scope of proposing the same in IITR. Uday
