What to Expect

This competition differentiates itself from the rest based on an innovative format that will involve three rounds of nail-biting problem solving. The W a l k - N' – S o l v e is an overall time-limited round that involves walking from station-to-station and solving problems while the clock ticks away. The faster the participants can solve problems, the more problems they can get to solve. The more problems the participants get correct, the higher their score. T h e L o s t P e n c i l, adds another dimension to problem-solving – participants need to solve problems without a pencil or paper. Again, this is a time-limited round, with quicker participant being able to take on more problems, although being too quick increases chances of error. The S c o o t O v e r is a seated one-on-one knockout round between the top 10 participants chosen from the previous two rounds. Each problem in this last round will be individually time-limited.

The competition will be based on:
  • Counting principles
  • Prime numbers
  • Basic geometry
  • Basic probability, and
  • Basic algebra.
The problems will be of the type found in competitions such as:

Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (http://www.moems.org/)

Problems will be simplified to allow speedy solution and in some cases solution without pencil and paper.
