INTRODUCTION

Asha for Education is a nonprofit tax-exempt organization dedicated to socio-economic change in India. In pursuit of this goal, Asha focuses on basic education in the belief that education is a critical requisite for socio-economic change. In keeping with this focus, our volunteers get involved with and support projects that are secular and have an education-related component to them.

The first chapter of Asha was started at University of California at Berkeley in the summer of 1991. A few students got together to think of phase that would enable them to play around with the development of their country . These young people shared the belief that education is a critical requisite and an effective catalyst for social and economic changes in India. Basic education became the agenda for the action group that emerged from this gathering. The group was named Asha to represent the hope that brought these individuals together and "the hope" that they aimed to bring into the lives of children in India.

Since then, Asha has steadily grown in strength and number. Today, Asha for Education has chapters in several places in the US and other countries. Each of these chapters raises funds to support various education-related projects in India. Anybody who is interested can become a member, and membership is not restricted based on race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age or handicap.

Keeping the principles of Asha in mind, a group of about 15 volunteers, in April 1998, formed a chapter in the city of Detroit. Asha Detroit is totally committed to children's education, and it is our goal to keep it free of bureaucracy and to guarantee 100% of donations go toward projects. Any administrative expense would be borne by the volunteers who would also closely monitor the funded projects to ensure that the money is put to best use.

Asha-Detroit currently supports four projects and is reviewing a few more.
