What is Dandiya Raas?
Dandiya Raas is the traditional folk dance performed during
the Navaratri (nine nights) period in the state of Gujarat in
India. The special characteristic of the dance is the colorful
costume worn by the dancers and the colorful sticks carried by
them as well the massive number of dancers in any single
programme. The sticks, called "Dandiya", are
used as prop and are beautifully decorated. It is for this
reason the dance is also called the 'Stick Dance'. These
sticks are usually made of bamboo and painted in different
colors to make them look attractive.
In Dandiya Raas men and women dance in two circles, with
Dandiya in their hands. The dancers strike the Dandiya with
their partners' to
the rhythm of the music played in the background. This dance
is very energetic and a fast paced activity. Although one can
be very creative with his/her dance steps, even those with no
prior experience of the dance,
but ready to take the plunge,
can thoroughly enjoy it.
Here are few photos and videos of our
Dandiya event in 2009.
