=========================== Juliana Arz - Goa =========================== Credits: Rohini Muthuswamy [Incomplete] Juliana: I am coming from ARZ (Anyay Rahit Zindagi) situated in redlight area of Vasco da Gama. Our main area of work is in trafficking which we consider a crime. We work with prostitutes, pimps, brothel keepers, vulnerable women and children. We have two programs o Anti-trafficking o Women's issues: rights, health etc. Trafficking Prevention program- the goal is to prevent the children from getting into prostitution. We have number of contact points/centers for these children. We work with the system, reslience building in these children, Skills: Tailoring program Health: Counseling for behavioural issues Education: Recreational activites: We try to see their vulnerability is reduced. The children with we work with are: slum children, brothel keepers children pimp and prostitutes children, children who beg (usually from AP and KN) When we started working with the children, the parents did not care. Then we moved into the phase where the parents said "oh Arz is there to take care of us". Now we are moving into a phase where the parents are beginning to become independent from ARZ. We are there to guide them but we are at the behind the scenes. We also work with system- educational system- we pay monthly school visits to get the progress of the children. Arz is the link between the school and the parents. Work with the police-especially in case of the runaway children. Tailoring programs- Arz began to work with the adolescent children. This was the skill that the community demanded. We work with the girls on changing the behavioural pattern. We focus on community participation, making the government work. We do prevention work to reduce the entry of girls into prostitution. We have filed cases against brothel keepers. Basic achievements of rehabilitation and rescue programs: Slum dwellers were from KN who had religious dedication-this has stopped. Reduction of children [entering prostitution] Control of exploitation. ( get the list from the hand out) Q How many people have you encountered who wanted to come out of prostiution? Juliana: The main thing that makes them come out is that the exploitation- they do not get food, money and are physical abuse. Q: Will punishment be a solution for this problem-Chandravel? Juliana: It acts as a detrrent. Q: There are women who want to be in prostitution. All the women ask what am I going to do coming out? Juliana: That is why we look for different rehab programs. In Goa there are no rehabilitation policies.
