=========================== Subhash and Anil FIRM, Kerala =========================== Credits: Rohini Muthuswamy [Will be completed soon] Subhash: Formed in 1995 in Kerala. Works with marginalized section of /Anil the society- WIP (Women in Prostitution). We have different programs- We are part of national network of sex workers. Sahadaya - a help line. Chilla- means branch of a tree. Networking: We organized 3 conferences of Sex Workers in kerala. We also organized the National Network of Sex Workers conferences, which is usually held in Calcutta. From the Sex Workers point of view- protection and care of their child, protection from police, housing, and finally health. There is no redlight area in kerala, there is no brothel in kerala. One of the issues we work with is the rehabilitation of the child of sex worker. They started a program called Chilla. Most of the SWs send their children to orphanage. The child becomes an orphan because the mother is usually not allowed to see her child. A mother has the right to protect her child, watch the progression of her child. We are caring of 27 children- 10 are in residential school and 17 are at home with Anil and Roja. We are supporting about 150 children through school uniforms and other things. There is no funding agency but only through friends. Chilla functions at different levels. The identity of the child is that of the mother. When the mother is able to operate her own children, the children will move back with their mother. We just provide a temporary home. We try to provide some alternative economical help for the mothers but we do not tell them do not do what you are doing. We are helping the children to overcome the stigma. Q: How frequently do the mothers come to visit their children. A: There is no restriction. Some mothers come once a week, some come during vacation.
