Kuvempu Trust Group, Chitradurga

Shanmuga: Three members from Kuvempu - three youth from villages in
	  Chtradurga and Davangere. They are not directly working on
	  these issues but these forces are prevalent in their 
	  villages. They want to work on this and have come here
	  to learn. 

	  Krishnappa, Yogesh and D. V. Prakash 

Krishnappa: I am working in Kuvempu mainly on education. In the last
	    2-3 months, I have been looking at the Devadasi System
	    that is prevelant in our region. 
	    
	    I dont have much experience in this but I think this is a
	    system that is coming from village side - not from the
	    cities. Devadasi means Slave of Deva, God. But people
	    with power convert it into Slave of Themselves - could be
	    for money or something else. 

	    I think that this is coming from superstitous beliefs,
	    e.g., cure of illness through dedication to Goddess such
	    as Yellamma, Mariamma etc. 

	    Near my village Ulluru, there is another village called
	    Jannuru. In that village there are about 21 women who are
	    practicing prostitution from the Devadasi system. It is
	    from them that I learnt about Devadasi system. 

	    Since we do not have much experience in this area, it will
	    be good if you can help us in any way - training,
	    financial etc.
