About Asha

Asha was started in 1991 on the campus of University of California, Berkeley with focus on basic education in the belief that education is a critical requisite for socio-economic change. Since then, both the cause and the organization have found a lot of support from individuals and institutions across the US and India. Asha has supported hundreds of different projects in India since its inception and currently has chapters across the world with more than a 1000 active volunteers. Asha volunteers work in partnership with grassroots organizations and special needs institutions in India to provide the necessary education for children in various communities.

We are a non-hierarchical, de-centralized, non-discriminatory, democratic, and transparent organization committed to the spirit of volunteerism and to making sure that our overheads are as low as possible, so that almost all of our donors' contributions reach the intended beneficiaries.

Asha Hyderabad was started in January 2003 by a group of 10 volunteers. As with its parent organization, Asha Hyderabad is totally committed to children’s education.
