What is Asha:
Asha for Education is a non-profit tax-exempt organization dedicated to socio-economic change in India.
In pursuit of this goal, Asha focuses on basic education in the belief that education is a critical requisite for socio-economic change. Our volunteers, with this focus, get involved with and support projects with education-related component to them.
How Asha Formed:
The first chapter of Asha was started at University of California at Berkeley (U.C, Berkeley) in the summer of 1991. A few students got together to think of empowering the development of their country. These young people shared the belief that education is a critical requisite and an effective catalyst for social and economic changes in India. ‘Basic education to all’ became the agenda for the action group that emerged from this brainstorm. This group was named Asha to represent the hope that brought these individuals together and “the hope” that they aimed to bring into the lives of children in India.
Evolution of Asha:
Since then, Asha has steadily grown in strength, support, activities, credibility and bringing change. Today, Asha for Education has chapters in several places around the world. Each of these chapter raises funds to support various education-related projects in India.
How to support Asha:
Anybody who is interested to support Asha, can become a member, and membership is not restricted based on race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age or handicap. Membership is open to all countries but the activities are currently limited to India’s children Education.
About Asha, Hyderabad:
Keeping the principles of Asha in mind, a group of about 10 volunteers, in Jan 2003, formed a chapter in the city of Hyderabad in India. Asha Hyderabad is totally committed to children’s education, and it is our goal to keep it free of bureaucracy and to leverage optimum funds usage with zero overhead & administrative cost. Any miscellaneous expense would be borne by the volunteers who would also closely monitor the funded projects to ensure that the money is put to best use. Currently Asha-Hyderabad supports few challenging Projects and is reviewing to take more with volunteers commitments and availability of expendable funds.
