Site visit of CINI AshaI visited CINI ASHA in Calcutta in March this year and was able to see one of their drop centres as well as a couple of prep centres. The main aim of CINI's activities is to pick children who are out of school (being forced for tasks like begging or put to work in factories) and attempt to get them back into regular school. It is a 2 step process where first in the drop in centres they first attempt to give the children a more civilized environment. This is important as often children are picked up from slums, railway stations etc. and are not used to being obedient, following schedules or use foul language. The 2 nd step is to provide them coaching in prep centres to prepare them to get back into school. I was highly impressed by CINI's activities there. They strike me as an organziation with a lot of experience in this kind of social work as they have been running such dropin and prep centres all over Calcutta for several years. As a result they are sensitive and aware of sveral of the key issues and problems in this kind of work. The funding they have requested is for a new prep center in an area in Calcutta. After having met some of their officers and being given a tour of some of their centres I have every reason to feel confident that the money we give will be used effectively. |
