Re: ASHA: Minutes of meeting (25th Feb)
YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO "ALTARS OF OUR REMEMBRANCE" -- a Multicultural
Multimedia Production, March 15-17, in the Union Play Circle Theatre at 7:00pm.
Each show is made up of two programs: Program A starts at 7:00pm and Program B
starts at 8:30. Each program is filled with a variety of artistic media--from
performance to video to installation. We will have a half hour intermission between
each program. We hope you will join us for both!
Hello Students,
WUD Performing Arts Committee and New Canon Performance Workshop, a multicultural
arts organization, are co-producing "Altars of our Remembrance" at the Frederich
March Play Circle in the Union on March 15-17, Monday through Wednesday from 7:00 -
10:00pm. "Altars of Our Remembrance" is an exciting multimedia production that
varies from video, installation and performance, to music and dance, to an original
one act play.
Many of the student artists of color in the production have discussed how they often
do not see themselves clearly reflected in the literature they read in classes or
the constant barrage of media they watch. They have attempted to change this pattern
by creating many original pieces of work that express their individual world views.
For example, three Indian-American women share contrasting pieces that range from
video art to an original one act play. The layering of individual voices and
various media denotes an intricate complexity which is deeply reflective of our
diverse society. "Altars of Our Remembrance" will allow those across campus who
only see themselves misrepresented rather than clearly reflected in the media to
possibly see themselves mirrored through the original work of their peers. In any
case, they will have the opportunity to hear the work of artists who refused
marginalization, created art out of their own experiences, and by doing so, were
empowered to make change.
You are warmly invited to view the production. Please remember that the show starts
the Monday after we all return from Spring Break. We hope you will join us. For
more information, please contact Sagina Varghese at varghese @students.wisc.edu.
Thank you!
