The Narmada river project is one of the largest of its kind in the world,
and if completed, will displace hundreds of thousands of (mainly
indigenous, tribal) people. In addition, the project already has had
devastating effects on the forests and ecology of the river valley. The
Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) ('Save the Narmada River Movement'), and its
dynamic leader Medha Patkar who spoke at UW-Madison in 1997, have been
leading the struggle against this project, in particular the Sardar Sarovar
and Maheshwar dams. This NBA is one of the largest people's movements in
post-independence India.
The film Narmada Diary provides an excellent background to the struggle,
and Aravinda, who has spent the past year working with the NBA activists,
will update us on current developments.
This is a free event organised by Chingari Forum, and
co-sponsored by the Center for South Asia, Indian Graduate Students
Association, UW-Greens, and Amnesty International
