India is witnessing

"A new kind of war"

says Booker Prize-winner author

Arundhati Roy
in an exclusive interview with Madison's WORT - 89.9 FM

Hear a special two-part program on what many are calling the most important
Gandhian social struggle in India today. With strong women leaders and a
with a majority of grassroots participants also being women, tens of
thousands of inhabitants of the Narmada River Valley in Central and West
India are currently waging a life and death fight against India's greatest
planned environmental disaster". the massive Narmada Valley Development
Project. The dams of this project are at this moment beginning to submerge
the first of hundreds of villages that are home to hundreds of thousands of
people, mainly indigenous communities. If allowed to continue, the dams
will displace these inhabitants from their own lands without any hope of
adequate resettlement.

WORT's program Third World View presents interviews with leaders of the
resistance movement in the Valley, along with organizers and participants
in the recent solidarity "Rally for the Valley". The program also features
writer Arundhati Roy discussing her new essay on the Narmada issue, the
politics of her writing, and the nature of India's commercial media.
