Hello Everyone,

Just came across a book that I thought a lot of you
might find very interesting. Its called Development
Microeconomics by Pranab Bardhan and Chrisopher Udry,
Oxford University Press, 1999. Its about 15 dollars.
It looks at some of the basic issues of development. A
smattering of the chapter titles are:- Household
economics, population, migration, the rural land
market, rural labour markets, environment and
development, trade and development, poeverty
alleviation: efficiency and equity issues,
technological learning and progess, human capital and
income distribution, etc.

There are four really good reasons to take a look at
this book:

1)Its focussed very much on rural development issues
including education.

2)It is based on some of the best data sets in
existance. Annual survey data from different countries
but mostly from India, in some cases for every year
since 1942. Carried out by local people.

3) These are the models and paradigms that
institutions like the World Bank base their policies
on. This is a good way to learn how they think.

4)It gives a good systematic guide about how to
approach some of these issues when we're not quite
sure how to think about them. And yes, its just one of
many ways!

Would like to emphasize its been written by
development econonmists very familiar with developing
countries and with extensive field experience in them
. Its very accessible if you have basic calculus and
minimal constrained optimization knowledge.
Statistical modelling familiarity will help you get
more out of it.

Hope some of you take a look at it and find it useful.

Regards,
Vineeta Yadav
