Minutes of the monthly meeting held on 8th November 2000 Volunteers present: Anita, Harit, Manoj, Ravi, Sai, Param, Dinesh, Subbu, Charu, Navin, Sanjay, Jagdish 1. Ashok Bhargava's paper on Economic development was distributed among the volunteers. 2. A order for 75 calendars to be placed and they will be available on 1st December. 3. The B school can conduct a project to market the activities of ASHA. This project may be a part of curriculum for the students in B school. Neeraj Arora to be contacted for the details of the same. Subbu and Sanjay will talk to Neeraj to finalize the details. 4. Community service was done by ASHA volunteers and this issue was discussed in details, as to how it will help ASHA. Navin will be co-ordinating the things related to community service. -The purpose of such work by volunteers can be collecting funds as well as creating awareness amongst people about ASHA and its activities. Community service to people who already know about ASHA, does not help greatly. So other people should be approached with these efforts. -Community service should not only be restricted to Indians in Madison but also can be extended to American community. -As a brainchild of this discussion, it was decided that volunteers can be part to the community service individually. 5. ECO-TEAMS: Eco-Teams are teams of people in the neighbourhoods, who come together to talk about environmental issues and take action to preserve it. e.g. Taking the recyclable garbage to the recycling center etc. ASHA volunteers can/should do such activities on personal basis. Later a ECO-TEAM as a group can be created. Such activities can be done by the volunteers spending about 3/4 hours per month. 6. PROJECTS update: a. Vivekananda Foundation(rural Karnataka) They need a financing of about $620 per worker and need funds for @4 workers. $2500 check to be sent for this project. b. Muskaan Bhopal: This project deals with work in the slum areas. An ASHA STAR activity to be started for this project. Co-ordinate with Neeraj for the same. c. Swarnirvar: A total amount of $2000 including $500 from ASHA Madison, sent for this project. d. Shikshaniketan: This is a girls high school in rural East UP. Thet plan to build a library, reading room and a compound wall. The budget for library and reading room is @ Rs. 3 lacs. ASHA Madison cannot provide funds on its own, so needs to take help from other chapters to provide funds. 7. NEWSLETTER: The news-letter will cover issues of Abhay Mehta's talk, Sainath's talk, Concert, project update, work-an-hour details etc. Information to be forwarded to Charu for completion of news-letter by next week. The news letter can also contain information in brief, about what AHSA Madison has done in the last 3/4 years. 8. Awareness group update: Awareness group meeting to come up with ideas to increase awareness about ASHA. The action to be taken for the same is arranging lectures and videofests. Topics for the same to be decided.
