As part of its Alumni Homecoming'99, UW-Madison organized the Celebration of Culture: a multicultural get-together where student organizations got an opportunity to raise money and get publicity by putting up a food stall or performing dance and music. We thought that this would be a great way to kick off the Fall semester by raising some awareness and some funds. The event was sponsored by the Madison Times and was held on 10 Oct 1999 at the Pyle Center next to Memorial Union, Madison. Our food stall sold samosas, tandoori chicken, dahi vada, kheer and masala tea. In addition, we had greeting cards on display and we handed out an Asha flyer with every plate of food we sold. Around 200-300 people attended the event and we sold food to a substantial fraction of the attendees. Many of our customers came back for encores. By the end of the day, we had raised a total of $194 with very minimal expenses incurred by volunteer home cooking. All in all, it was a good experience with a large number of volunteers cheerfully donating time and effort (both cooking as well as manning the stall), and in return having the satisfaction of achieving Asha-Madison's goals of participation.
