Local arrangements

  • Travel directions: Click here for directions on getting to Madison and UW-Madison campus. Please get in touch with your hosts (see below) for directions to their house or wherever you are meeting them.
  • Accomodation: We will pair up each attendee with a host in Madison, see the registration page for the pairing and use the contact information above to get in touch with your host. Please do this ASAP and inform them of when and where you will be arriving. Also, please bring your own sleeping bags since a spare bed is not guaranteed.
  • Conference venue: Manthan 2001 is being held in room Old Madison West of Memorial Union, 800 Langdon Street, Madison, WI 53706. Click here for a map of the UW-Madison campus (see above for directions to campus) and click here for information on parking near Memorial Union.
  • Food: We will not be providing breakfast/lunch/dinner to attendees but we will be providing tea/coffee/cookies (a $10 registration fee needs to be charged to cover food and venue costs). Memorial Union is in downtown Madison and is close to many restaurants and coffee shops (apart from facilities inside Memorial Union itself), so finding a place to eat will not be a problem.
  • Presentations: The conference room has a facility for projecting a computer-based presentation (PowerPoint) but you need to bring your own laptop. An overhead projector can also be arranged if you are bringing transparencies.

The meaning of Manthan

Manthan means churning in Hindi and Sanskrit. Perhaps the most famous example is the Samudra Manthan of Hindu mythology which produced divine nectar, and which is commemorated annually at the Kumbh Mela (click here for more information). We hope that the conference will also bring about a churning of minds and ideas to produce fruitful results.
