March 22: Tu Zinda Hai
1995, 53 min, directed by Shabnam Virmani
Activists of Ekta Parishad, a women's mass movement in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, challenge the authority of discriminatory patriarchal structures and survive the backlash. This documentary was awarded the Best Society & Development Film at IVFEST, Thiruvananthapuram, 1995.

March 29: Narmada: A Valley Rises
1994, 86 min, directed by Ali Kazimi
Beautifully photographed and inspiring, this film documents a 200 km. non-violent Gandhian march of more than 6000 people protesting against a massive dam project on the Narmada river in western India. Winner of the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival, 1995.

April 5: Butterfly
2000, 79 min, directed by Doug Wolens
Environmental activist Julia "Butterfly" Hill lived on a 200-ft tall ancient redwood tree named Luna from 20 December 1997 to 18 December 1999 to save it from the Pacific Lumber Company. Best documentary at the Kudzu Film Festival, 2000.

April 12: Patha Patha Akshar Hoga
1999, 61 min, directed by K Stalin
The Dumka literacy campaign has changed the lives of people in the Santhal Pargana region of the Indian state of Bihar. This film portrays the movement that has begun to upset traditional power balances in both public and private spheres

April 19: When Women Unite
1996, 80 min, directed by Shabnam Virmani
The incredibly moving story of the anti-arrack (state-supplied distilled liquor) movement that led to the eventual ban of arrack sales in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. A true grass-roots movement with no identifiable leaders even today. This film won the Grand Prize at the 6th Tokyo Global Environmental Film Festival, 1997.
