Work-An-Hour (WAH) is the largest worldwide annual Asha event where we focus on a few projects and work together to make a dramatic impact on education overnight. Each year during the time of India's Independence Day (August 15), donors from around the world come together in a show of great human spirit, and contribute ONE HOUR of their pay towards educating underprivileged children in India. The amount and date are purely symbolic since we accept donations of any amount till September 5 (Teacher's Day in India).

WAH-2003's goal is to raise $125,000 this year. The money will support 4 worthy projects in India. For more information regarding money raised and details of the projects supported, please visit the Work-An-Hour home page. Here are short summaries of the efforts of previous years:

  • Work-An-Hour 2002 raised funds to support non-formal education centers in Orissa, primary school education in Rajasthan, natural resource regeneration and rejuvenation in Andhra Pradesh, and residential girls camps in Rajasthan. Nearly 1300 donors contributed over $90,000.
  • Work-An-Hour 2001 raised funds to support schools for slum children in Bangalore, a vocational center for disabled and underprivileged children in rural Maharashtra, education and vocational training in remote Garhwal, continuing support for the Irula tribals of Tamil Nadu and a school for tribal children in a remote part of Kerala. A total of 1399 donors contributed $101,471.
  • Work-An-Hour 2000 raised funds to support schools for tribal children in Tamil Nadu, educating street children in Mumbai and building schools in villages in rural Rajasthan. A total of 1378 donors contributed $80,706 during the 8 weeks that the website was open.
  • Work-An-Hour 1999 raised money to support three projects: Vivekanand Education Society in West Bengal, Seva Nilayam in Tamil Nadu, and the Bhoomi Heen Sewa Samithi in Uttar Pradesh. A total of 1166 pledges were received totalling more than $54000, far exceeding initial expectations.
  • Work-An-Hour 1998 generated awareness about economically challenged children in Ballia, migrant child laborers in Kanpur, and physically challenged children in the outskirts of Delhi. A total of $32,000 was raised to improve the condition of the children in these projects.
