Access to education is a basic human right that too many children in India are deprived of. Asha for Education is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization that has been working since 1991 to change this. Asha's volunteers work to find, develop and fund education projects in the hopes of empowering India's youth. Since its inception, Asha has raised over $4 million to help finance more than 350 projects across 24 Indian states.

Founded in 1995, Asha's Boston/MIT chapter is a group of dedicated working professionals and students in New England that has developed long-standing ties to people and organizations in India working to expand and improve education.

Book Donations

A book donation can be considered to be the most precious of all. It encourages a child to read, opens her mind to the world. The habit of reading, learned as a child, is probably the most important habit, leading to a well-informed grown up.

While we have limitless access to books here, libraries in rural schools in India are non-existent. Children rarely have access to any reading material except their textbooks. There are also very few good children's books available in Indian languages.

Tulika books (www.tulikabooks.com), a publisher in India, is making Indian language book sets (approximately 131 books each) available at a heavy discount for non-profit organizations. We are making use of that to send books to villages in India where our project partners have centers for children and can manage the books. Tulika books are very highly regarded by many of our projects, so we are excited to have this 60-70% discount on their regular prices. The bilingual English-Indian language books are helpful to improve knowledge of English.

In Gujarat, we are looking for support for 100 book sets. Each book set (109 books) costs Rs. 2725 (approx. $45).

In Andhra Pradesh, we are looking for support for 36 book sets. Each book set (131 books) costs Rs. 3025 (approx. $50).

Donors will be acknowledged at the registry maintained for the books at each village center. If you would like to donate a book set, please contact us here. All donations are fully tax-deductible and can be easily made online.

Please forward to friends and family.

Thank you.

Successful completion of the Alstom Foundation project

Update from Melli :-

You might recall that our chapter was successful in getting a large grant ($130K) to build a "green" girls' home. The home was built at Deenabandhu a project partner. The home was successfully inaugurated, and overall Alstom is very pleased. After the initial grant Alstom and Deenabandhu developed a direct contact and Asha's role mostly came to an end (though we would have been responsible if there had been a hitch in the project).

A video summary of the opening ceremony (Alstom's officials attended this in Chamajaranagar, the town where Deenabandhu works): Video link

I have uploaded photographs and press releases at the Deenabandhu webpage

Thanks so much to all who helped make it happen. I consider this a successful project and partnership.
