Asha for Education (Asha) is a secular, volunteer run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the education of underprivileged children in India. The group was named Asha to represent the aim of bringing hope through education into the lives of these children. The organization has grown from 3 volunteers since its inception in 1991 to over 1000 volunteers in 2009, with 73 chapters globally and 45 chapters in the United States. Asha has disbursed over $17 million as of 2008 and supported more than 400 different projects spanning 24 states in India. The organization has a zero overhead policy on donations, i.e., 100% of all donations get spent on educational projects in India. Asha for Education has received a four star rating from Charity Navigator and was ranked #1 among the "top-ten slam-dunk charities" in 2005 and 2007.

The New York City/New Jersey chapter of Asha was started in the summer of 1994 by students from Columbia, Rutgers and Yeshiva Universities. Today, the team is comprised of a diverse group of young professionals and students. The chapter celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2009 and extends a hearty thanks to every volunteer and donor who has helped bring hope into the lives of children in India over the past fifteen years.
