Sixth Annual 5K Run/Walk - June 6th, 2009

We are excited to organize our Sixth annual 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Riverside Park in NYC. Each year, participants young and old run or walk a 5 kilometer ( 3.1 miles) route and raise money through pledged donations from friends and family. So grab your sneakers, raise some money and help make education a gift that every child deserves!

Notes of Hope (Performance by Indian Ocean) - August 25, 2007

On August 25, 2007, Asha hosted popular Indian fusion rock band - Indian Ocean at Notes of Hope, Asha's annual musical concert.
Indian Ocean played to a packed audience of over 500 guests. The concert was held at Synod Hall on Upper West Side in NYC. The evening started with an opening act by 'The Quartet' with Siddharth Malik on Guitar, Barry Shapiro on Rhythm, Rob Coover on Bass, and Arun Vishwanathan on Percussion.
The act was rightly called 'An Ode to the Ocean'. Indian Ocean took the stage after the opening act and had the audience captivated right through the end. The band played songs from their more recent albums including the Bollywood hit Bandeh and wrapped up the concert with their all-time hit Kandisa. The concert after-party was at Columbus 72.
Guests at the after-party got a chance to meet the band. The concert also featured a cash-bar, light snacks, and Asha merchandise including Indian Ocean and Asha co-branded t-shirts. The concert raised over $10,000 towards education related projects that Asha supports.
Prominent sponsors for the event included Time Warner Cable - Movies on Demand (Channel 500) and Maya's Lounge. Other sponsors for the event were International Wines and Spirits, Trader Joe's, House of Dosas (Hicksville, NY), Kanchi Kamakoti Seva Foundation Inc., Leaptutor.com, Cafe Spice, Ambadi Restaurants (White Plains, NY).

Happy hour - July 12, 2007

Asha volunteers came together in a relaxed and trendy environment at Chill Lounge to meet up with old friends and make some new ones. The happy hour was very well attended by current members and those interested to know more about Asha.

4th Annual 5K Run/Walk - June 30, 2007

On an early, warm summer Saturday morning, over 300 people lined up to race for children's education in India at Manhattan's Riverside Park. The 4th Annual Asha for Education NYC/NJ Run/Walk set-off at 9 am on June 30 along the scenic Hudson River. Around $20,000 was raised for education initiatives in India through sponsorships and participants' pledged donations by the end of the day.

After the last runner crossed the finish line, awards were given to the top fundraisers and fastest runners. Lina George, who raised over $1600, was awarded the top prize of an iPod Nano and a Maya Lounge gift certificate. Jagannath Das and Keerthi Arumraju took second and third place respectively. The fastest male runners were Gidey Kahsay and Rafael Veras and the fastest female runners were Belainesh Gebra and Sara Vergote. The first place runners took home $250 in cash and the second place runners took home $100.

All participants were treated to complimentary refreshments and food as well as a goodie bag, which included a free Asha for Education 5K t-shirt.

An Evening of Hope: A Dinner Gala - May 19, 2007

Asha for Education, NYC/NJ hosted its first dinner gala at the Waldorf Astoria on May 19th 2007. The event was a huge success and was attended by over 150 people, including guests from several companies such as T-Mobile, Cap Gemini, RSG Systems, Goldman Sachs, and AiCon Gallery.

The evening started off with a cocktail reception and silent auction at 6:30PM. The Guest of Honor for the evening, Mr.S.Gopalakrishnan, COO and President of Infosys Technologies Ltd. later spoke about globalization, its effect on India, and the role of education in the progress of the nation. He was followed by the Special Guest Speaker for the evening, Mr.P.Sainath, award winning author and editor for the rural affairs section of the Hindu, who gave a contrasting view on the effect of progress on the rural sections of India. The evening was hosted by comedian Daniel Nainen.

Several exciting and exclusive items were auctioned off in both a silent auction and live auction formats. Sponsors for the evening included Sony Entertainment, Pocono MRI, Bilimoria Wines and Diageo. The event raised over $40,000 from donors, sponsors and auctions. Of this amount, $6000 was donated directly towards the purchase of a van for the Door Step, School on Wheels project in Mumbai. Click here to view pictures from the event.


Bollywood Meets Hollywood Fundraiser Theme Party - March 10, 2007

Asha's Support A Child program held a fun theme party to raise money for Seva Chakkara Samajam, a homeless children's shelter in Chennai, India. About 100 of Asha volunteers and guests attended the event dressed as their favorite Bollywood or Hollywood character. Prizes were given out for Best Dressed male and female characters.


2007 Kick-Off Event - February 2, 2007

Following a successful year of new, enterprising initiatives in raising funds for education in India, Asha for Education NYC/NJ kicked-off this year with an announcement of its plans for 2007 at ArtsIndia Gallery on Friday, February 2. The gallery was packed with over 150 guests including donors, education supporters, and volunteers who perused the gallery with complimentary wine, beer, and hors d'oeuvres in hand.

The night also showcased the musical talents of Siddharth Malik and Arun Vishwanathan, a guitarist and percussionist, who performed Indian fusion music for the event. Two lucky guests won a gift voucher each to dine at MINT restaurant in Manhattan.

During the evening, Asha volunteers made a presentation to give an overview of the organization and highlight its unique features and highlight accomplishments of the NYC/NJ chapter from 2006, one of its most successful years yet. The chapter raised approximately $250,000 from events such as its annual 5k Run/Walk, a musical concert featuring Indian classical music legend Pt. Shivkumar Sharma, and the flagship NYC marathon program that provides runners with a dedicated coach, mentors, and other logistical support while runners train.
