Project Highlight:Santiniketan Shishutirtha
  
Over the past two years Asha has helped Santiniketan Sishutirtha construct a new school building for children attending classes six through eight. Prior to the construction of this building, despite high demand for classes six through eight, the school was only able to accommodate classes one through five. The total funding supplied by Asha over the past two years is a total of $11,140.

4 SAATHII - AIDS Orphan
SAATHII began as an international movement to bring together the HIV/AIDS community in forming a unified voice and taking collective action against HIV/AIDS in India. Asha is supporting SAATHII for the first time.

5 Sankurathri Foundation
Based just outside of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, Sankurathri was founded as a model school that has changed the way the community viewed education. In contrast to the other schools in the area, Sarada Vidyalayam demands strict discipline and sets high academic standards. Every single student who has entered Sankurathri school has successfully completed 7th grade and 5 passed the state exam with first class. Asha for Education recently launched an Asha Stars program to support teacher's salaries of the school.

6 Sarada Kalyan Bhandar
Sardar Kalyan Bhandar (SKB) has three primary areas of work: primary education, healthcare for children, and higher education. They created an after-hours school program aimed at class preparation and regular school attendance. SKB also provides women from underdeveloped villages financial support while they pursue higher education. Asha for Education has helped raise money to complete the construction of a tuition center for this project.

7 Sarvodaya Parivar Trust
In 1994, Dolatsingh Parmar started the Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, a residential school located in Pindval to teach a small group of 40 boys in first grade. Through Asha for Education’s support and guidance, they started to enroll girls and set up a separate building for them as well. The enrollment has grown every year and there are now over 200 students attending the school from pre-school classes to the 7th grade.

8 Seva Chakkara Samajam
The Seva Chakkara Orphanage houses a residential school for children from grades I to V. After grade V children continue their education in local schools. They continue to be provided for by the orphanage till they are able to stand on their own.

9 Child Aid Foundation
The Child Aid Foundation is a non-government organization working for education of poor and needy children in India. CAF runs “Shri Vijaya Bharati School", located in slums of Vijayawada city, Andhra Pradesh. The organization is established in 1993. CAF undertakes conventional education from the Nursery to the 9th standard/class (this year 10th) level according to the Government’s Department of Education approved syllabus and curriculum. There are 13 qualified teachers on staff and 350 children in all. The children come from the city slum and nearby impoverished village areas. Their parents are uneducated and very poor.

10 Kedi Residential School for girls
Kaivalya Trust, which is a non-political, not-for-Profit NGO, Registered since April 28, 2003, runs Kedi Residential School. The group aspires to provide a supportive and conducive environment that would benefit the Adivasis of Dharampur Taluka [Dist. Valsad, South Gujarat, India] to progress educationally, economically, socially and thus to bridge the wide gap between rural-urban society.
Kedi Residential School is to provide relevant formal education along with vocational training system, which can prepare them to work and live in their own villages. The school will follow Gujarat State School Board curriculum. In the first year at ‘Kedi’, we the students are prepared to get a strong foundation of the primary education before they start preparing for standard 8, 9 and the Board exam of standard 10. During the courses of four years, we will offer them following vocational training. Agriculture, nursery,food products, Craft and Bamboo Products, Machine and Hand Embroidary, Cutting and stitching.

11 Sahyog Ekta
Sahyog provides educational program for adolescent girls in Jari Mari and Dindoshi and children with disabilites in JariMari. The project is located in Mumbai, in two separate slum settlements. The population is predominantly poor, largely migrant.

1. Sahyog School Without Walls This is the oldest program of Sahyog. Established in June 2000, this is a community-based school for out-of-school adolescent girls. The primary aim of Sahyog school is to give these girls confidence in themselves and develop their capacity for critical thinking. Sahyog also offers the girls opportunity to link with the formal system. Currently, its two branches have about 50 girls each.

2. Sangharsh Special Education Program Sangharsh is a community-based rehabilitation and training program that started in the Jari Mari slum areas of Mumbai. The program started in 2003 for poor families with children for special needs. with only two specialized teachers, the program is able to cater 25-30 children with different kinds of disability

3. Sahyog Ekta Started in 2003, the Sahyog Ekta community based health program was set up as a small clinic in both school locations through which access to basic health services are provided
Asha NYC/NJ supported for the recurring expenses for 2007-2008 of this school with an amount of $9000.

This is an urban project located in Kolkata. The organization runs special school for mainly the mentally challenged and autistic children. The number of children undergoing education at present is 40.
Asha NYC/NJ has supported with an amount of $ 3850.00 for a bus to transport children to the school from their homes and for library books. /td>

13 Shilpa Society
Shilpa Society for Mentally Handicapped was forned by Dr. Premila and Dr. Harimohan in December 1996 with the purpose of improving the quality of life of mentally handicapped children. The organization has focused on early intervention as one of its primary goals. It has setup a nodal early intervention unit for this purpose. Its long-term goals are to accelerate the rate of development in these children and , minimize the effect of the handicapping condition and increase their independent functioning. Asha helped Shilpa Society to purchase a school bus.

14 Fellowship Siddamma
Siddamma is a grassroots activist who has worked extensively with the Irula tribal communities. She is the founder of Bharati Trust which has organized community-based initiatives, such as motivational centers, community resource centers and unorganized worker’s unions. She was instrumental in the release of bonded laborers from the rice mills in Red Hills near Chennai. She has been recognized as an Asha Fellow. Asha NYC/NJ, along with Asha Austin, helped to construct Bharati Trust Resource Center in 2007.

15 HUT
Human Uplift Trust (HUT) was founded in 1983 by Mrs Rajagopalan with the mission to help community members access basic human rights. It is based in Perambalur near Trichy in Tamil Nadu which has been identified as one of the high prevalance areas for AIDS in India. HUT found that children were the worst affected by the AIDS epidemic. In the absence of educational opportunities and parental guidance, they were exposed to illegal activities and sex trafficking thereby also increasing the danger of spread of the disease. HUT AIDS Orphans Project was started to tackle this issue. It has a mission to provide formal education to children and orphans from families affected by AIDS (FAA) in a safe and stigma-free environment. Asha NYC/NJ and Asha Florida jointly supported this project in 2007. We provided assistance to meet food and medical expenses, educational and recreational materials and some administrative expenses for the school.
