Shanti Badri's visit to Seva Chakkara


Shanti Badri is a researcher in the area of education and has
experience with teaching over 20 years. Recently, she had expressed
interest of starting her dream project to help children learn and at
the same time have fun(joyful learning). We had suggested that she
visit Seva Chakkara's computer center which Asha Chennai is working
with now. Although, it had nothing to do with her dream, (big lawn,
lots of space!) the visit as she put it in an earlier email "could melt
the heart of the hardest criminals". She has decided that her dream
place can wait and she would work towards the education of the children
at the orphanage and from there use the same materials for children all
over Chennai.

Dear DP,

I thank you for inviting me to join the teleconference.
Well, I had to pinch myself twice to feel that I am really part of the
hi-tech power with a mission group.
I gave a very serious thought and reconsidered the project to view it
from ASHA point of view more precisely Sanjeev's point.
I have remodelled the center world to cater to the Choollai community.
I will discuss it further with Lakshmi. I am drawing the programme
briefly for your comments
For Seva chakkara orphange school

1.Set up a prototype of the Learning center for the students; train
the teacher to use it effectively. Train the teachers to make their
own materials. Supply initial materials necessary to kick start the
center.
This is not a commercial one it will be for the benefit of the
orphanage.
RESOURCE CENTER
2. Set up Resource center at the sevachakkara computer institute. It
will
be a fee giving model for the outsiders, and for the sevachakkara
children
free as per a set timeschedule.

STEP 1
* Learning center for children 2+ with six learning areas should be
established by Vijaya Dasami (OCTOBER)
To start off I will create 2 areas by mid August fully ready with
aparatus and materials necessary and teachers trained.
* Distribute leaflets and also place ads and write up in the local
area
newspaper about the Resourse center for 5+ above and skill dev.
classes
for others. Fix up a date to talk to the parents of the area about the
project. In short awareness building campaign. (by august 1st week)

STEP 2
* Establish a fully functional center with tapes/tape recorder; T.V;
Computer 2/CDs (no internet) and other A.V.equipments by end August.
* Explore the possibilties of running soft skills development class
for
senior students. Sort of personality and communication dev. classes
based
on the response.

I am working on building up materials and curriculum for all the three
which caters to students as well as teachers in English. We will get a
similar set for tamil learning too. Lakshmi is a great help at these.
