Six people have been named as winners of this year's prestigious Magsaysay awards in the Philippines.
Among the winners was the Philippine supreme court judge, Hilario Davide, who was awarded the coveted prize for his contribution to democracy.
The honour list included Ruth Pfau, a Roman Catholic nun, who has been working to improve the treatment of lepers in Pakistan, and Cynthia Maung of Burma who founded a clinic to treat refugees at the Burmese-Thai border.
The Magsaysay prize for journalism was awarded to Bharat Dutta Koirala of Nepal.
The Buddhist monk Sukho Choi was the winner of the peace award and Sandeep Pandey of India won the emergent leadership award for his projects to help poor children in India. The Magsaysay awards are named in honour of the late Philippine president, Ramon Magsaysay, who died in a plane crash in 1957.
