History:
Asha was started in 1991 by a group of students studying in the University of Berkeley. The group was named 'Asha' to represent the 'hope' that had brought these individuals together and the 'hope' that education would bring into the lives of children in India.

Asha Portland:

Asha-Portland chapter was formed in the fall of 1999 by a diverse group of professionals and students from the Portland area. It is a non-profit voluntary organization dedicated to socio-economic change in India mainly using the medium of education. Our goal is to also address whenever possible other development and human issues such as women's issues and related issues.

Objectives:

• Mobilize the communities and corporations in Portland to collectively support and provide financial assistance to grass-roots level educational movements in India.
• Maximize effectiveness of our efforts by seeking and working with support groups in rural and economically poor areas.
• Form close partnerships with groups in India and maintain regular contact and visit the groups we work with to form a stable long term relationship.
• Provide assistance in multiple ways such as financial, material and technological support to the groups in India.
• Learn about and disseminate information on different social issues faced by the affected people in India.

Volunteers:

We always welcome new volunteers. If you are interested in joining our steadily growing team of enthusiastic volunteers, please email us at asha_pdx@yahoo.com.
