PROJECT PROPOSAL
Overview
The village Devapur is situated in Adilabad District of Andhra Pradesh,
India. There is a small school (Government School) with classes 1st
to 7th and the total strength of the school is 300. In the premises
of the school, there are about 100 not enrolled and dropout (Child Laborers)
children in the village. The teaching staff has 9 members out of which
only 5 are permanent teachers and 4 are temporary volunteer teachers.
The village mainly consists of tribal community people who are very poor and downtrodden. The government has approved to upgrade this upper primary school into a high school by providing 8th, 9th and 10th classes, as there is no high school within a radius of 13 Kms. The government will provide only the teaching staff but no other minimum requisitions.
The school currently has only three rooms, which accommodate the existing classes. The higher classes do not have any space available. Out of the existing 7 classes, children of 4 classes are sitting in the ground outside the single school building, which has 3 rooms. For the other students, there is need for classrooms, furniture, science materials, library materials and sports material.
A committee has been formed to implement the introduction of the higher classes to the school. This will help the children who dropout after 7th since the nearest high school is about 13 Kms and the children will have to take the bus (only twice a day) or bike to the school and then walk to the school. About 65% of the children that attend the 7th at this school do not go to the 8th. Having the 8th, 9th and 10th classes in this school will help these children from dropping out of school.
The committee consists of the Headmistress of the school and some elder members of the village. The Headmistress acts as the Co-coordinator. They have raised awareness of this in the local community and have started raising funds. They have also approached the government education department – the DEO – District Education Officer and have his support in this. The government has agreed to give only the basic support – which is Rs 2000 Per annum. The school also needs science equipment – the details of which are provided.
The construction plans have already been drawn. A copy of the construction
plan has been provided. The construction costs are estimated to be about
$1000. The construction is planned to begin in July 2002. The cost of the
lab equipment and furniture is estimated to cost another $1000. Asha Portland
will help
the school providing financial support to build classrooms and also
in purchasing other necessary equipment.
