Dear Mr. Arputham,

We are happy to let you know that Asha-MIT/Boston will be able to continue to work with you for the next year (the school year of 2004-2005) in the villages of Kolanthancheri and Venbakkam.  In addition, as we discussed we will add the village of Melachery.

Last year the components included construction.  This year the components we fund will be as follows:

Total per school                                  Total (for 3 schools)

(1) Teacher’s salary:  Rs. 1,500 / month     Rs 18,000 per school                      Rs. 54000

(2) Learning materials:                                Rs  2500 per school                                 Rs.   7500

(3) Evaluation of students:                          Rs.  4000 per school                                Rs.  12000

(4) Plates and vessels                                  Rs.  2500 (for Melachery only)               Rs.    2500

(5) Coordinator salary, Rs 3000 / month                                                                     Rs.  36000

Total:   Rs. 112,000 = $2455

The support is for the school year 2004-2005.  Enclosed is the check for $1300 for the first six months.   We will plan on sending the second installment in January.  Please send us a report in th beginning of January for the first six months.   Please note that items (2) and (3) above are for use after discussions with Asha-Chennai.  That is, Asha-Chennai will actively participate in the selection of learning materials and evaluation of students.

Please send us a paper receipt for this amount as soon as you receive it.  Also, a copy of your yearly audit report. your yearly audit report?

We are also interested in knowing the involvement of the villagers.  You had mentioned that the VEC (village education committee) does not voice their opinions in meetings.  We would like to see whether the VEC meetings can be better organized.  As a first step, can you send us a list of parents who attend these meetings?  Can you also send us a list of parents whose children are in school?  Can you also describe a VEC meeting (who attends, and what is discussed?)

Sincerely,

Melliyal Annamalai
