NON FORMAL EDUCATION FOR SCHOOL DROP OUTS AT NARADAPATTU – REPORT FOR 2002-2003

 

 

1. Project Title                                                       : Eradication of Illiteracy Among the Young School

  Dropouts.

4. Period of Report                                               :01.05.2002 to 30.04.2003. (12months)

 

5.Project objectives                                             : 1. To enroll the target group of working children,

      dropouts and migrant children to formal school.

 

                                                                                    2. To wean away the children from work force and

            make some of villages free from children labours.

 

3. To improve the living condition of the poor by

way of community awareness and government 

programmes.

 

4. To prevent the growing children from going to

work.

 

6. Size of the centre and

    particulars of Beneficiaries                             : During  the review period 15 Children (6 boys and

9 Girls) were enrolled for Non Formal Education.  Along with 25 Children enrolled during the year 2001-02, the total number of children covered under the programme is 40.

 

7. Programme commencement                            : Ms. R. Samundi handled the classes to the whole

students up to Oct’02.  The additional Teacher are appointed and handled the classes Nov’02 onwards.

 

8. Infrastructure (s) acquired                              : (a) The centre continued to function in the same premises at

       Naradapattu.

 

(b) The class was equiped with an additional Table, Chair for

      the Second Teacher appointed.  Teaching Aids viz. Charts,

      Flash Cards and other  teaching learning materials were 

      added during the year.

 

(c) Students were provided with  slates , Note books, Books as

      prescribed by SRC under Non Formal Education system,

      pencil and Pen.

 

 

9.  Curriculum / Syllabus                                     : The curriculum as developed by the State Resource Centre

Chennai a  State Government body was followed for the programme.  The syllabus prescribed by the above centre was adopted.  The syllabus comprise of two stages to be completed in two years.  The first stage ensures the student reaching the III Standard and the second stage of V standard qualification.  After completion of the second stage, the  students would have  acquired knowledge equivalent to IV Standard under formal system of education.  Such student are expected to continue their education  after the second stage in the formal school system i.e V.  Brief on the subjects and syllabus under the I and II stages had already been furnished to the Agency under the cover of our letter dated 11 Dec’2000.

 

While 25 students enrolled during 2001-02 had completed the

stage II.  The 15 children enrolled in 2002-03 had reached the

stage I . The IInd Stage passed children will be admitted Vth

Standard in our centre for the year 2003-04.

 

10. Staff (Teacher ) Training                               : Mrs. P. Mullai is the Second Teacher appointed.  She is a

Post Graduate.  Along with Ms. R. Samundi, there are now 2 Teachers Maintaining the centre.  Ms. P.Mullai was exposed to a 3 days basic training under Non Formal Education system (28.10.2002 to 30.10.2002).  She was exposed to a few Non Formal    Education   centres    organised     by    the        SRC  

Ms. R.Samundi was deputed for a workshop on Gender and Child Rights organised by IWID, Muttukadu, Chennai during.  25.3.2003 to 28.3.2003 Periodic training on Non Formal Education and other activities were provided to the two teachers during the year.

 

11. Working Hours                                              : The centre worked on all week days (Monday to Saturday). 

The daily working hours is 6 to 8 P.M (2 Hours).

 

12. Subjects covered                                           : Tamil (Mother Tongue) , Mathematics, Environment and life

oriented education.  Recreation was given due importance. 

Sports / Games taught with playing kits.

 

13. Teaching methodology                                 : The teaching methodology include through Songs, Dance,

Story Telling, Games playing, Normal Teaching etc.

15. Progress of the programme                          :(a) All the 40 Students showed keen interest in learning and

       their attendance is more than 90%.

 

(b) Students have acquired proficiency in reading and writing

     Tamil .

 

(c) Learnt Numerals, now can do basic arithmetic of addition

     and subtraction.

 

(d) Learnt environment aspects.

 

(e) Two days exposure programme are organised in March’03

38 Childrens are participated and enjoyed very happy.  They

visited Santhanur Dam, Chennai Beach, Valluvar kottam,   

Mel maruvathur Temple and also Kanchipuram Temple. 

 

(e) Examinations have just commenced.  The results of the

Examination will be communicated in due course to Asha Mit. 

The progress under the programmes is satisfactory.

 

16. Parents / People Participation                      : The involvement of the people / parents in the programme is notable.  They were taken into confidence at all stages of the programme.  As the programme progressed, the parents took active interest and ensured regular attendance of their wards to the centre.  They agreed to reduce the work load of their wards.  Their relation with the teacher is very good.  The parents are now inclined to send their wards to school after completion of the next Stage of the programme. We conducted periodical parents meetings regularly.

 

17. Difficulties Encountered                               :The difficulty experience in the previous year persists.

 

18. Expenditure incurred                                     : A total expenditure of Rs. 54,068/- was incurred during year.  Detailed Expenditure Statement is enclosed. (Annexure II)

 

19. Conclusion                                                      : The programme had initiated retrieval of additional 15 young children from the clutches of illiteracy and gave them opportunity for learning.  It  had kindled interest in studies in them.  We are confident that these student will continue their education in formal schools after completing the second stage.

 

20. Special Request                                              : The agency is requested to consider sanction of balance amount of US $ 500 at an early date.
