A brief description of the long term objectives of the organization:

The school has at present one hundred and twenty-nine students, in the kindergarten and Grade I classes. The plan is to provide primary education, up to Grade V, to start with, at which point, there would be about two hundred and forty students in the school.

The school will keep adding one grade every year as it moves forward and has currently planned to provide primary education (up to Grade V). However, if sufficient funds are available, then the scope of the school will expand to provide education up to grade 10. Bharat Vidhyalayam, at present, operates from a rented premises. To ensure long term stability of this project, the school plans to move into its own building. The project, which includes the purchase of land and construction of a building, will cost approximately Rs. 25 Lakhs.

Describe location, current conditions (number of schools, population):

The school is located in Karikudi a small town in Southern part of Tamil Nadu. The school is situated in the middle of very poor community. The primary occupation of the people around the school is Washers, Helpers and Goolis. The average monthly income of the people in that area is approximately Rs.1000.

Details of the Specific Project

  1. What is the goal of the project (describe background of the children, what changes this project aims to bring about in the current conditions):
Bharat Vidhyalayam will provide a quality primary education to the underprivileged children, creating an environment that will allow them to flourish, and be proud and productive citizens of India. Students are admitted to the school based on economic criteria of the parents. Currently parents earning an income less than Rs. 2000 (USD 50) per month will be allowed to admit their children on a space available basis with the lowest income families taking priority. The parents need to be committed to the educational process and prior to enrollment we try to determine the amount of time the parents will be available to assist their children. The school also plans to provide guidance and coaching to parents of students, who themselves are illiterate.

The objectives of Bharat Vidhyalayam are:
  1. Beneficiaries of the project (how many children, number of males/females, age and other demographics, and other relevant details):

    Funding Details

  3. Details of the funding requirements:
  4. The funding is required primarily for construction of school building. The school?s annual operating expenses are funded by donations from the Selvamani family.

  5. Amount of money required:
  6. We expect the land and building cost to be around Rs. 25 Lakhs (approximately $50,000). We plan to collect donations from our friends in U.S and in other countries as one time donation for the initial set-up of the school. We are respectfully requesting your help in obtaining tax exemptions and we would like to be considered for potential corporate matching. We would also welcome any contributions that Asha itself may see fit to provide.

  7. Duration for which funds are requested:

  8. One time contribution.

  9. How long will the benefit last? Please give an approximate US $/child/year estimate in the project:

  10. Selvamani?s family is committed to contribute up to Rs. 3 Lakhs a year for this school. This amount should be sufficient to run the school up to Grade V. In future for any reason if Selvamani?s family cannot continue to contribute to this project and no sponsors are available, the school would charge 50% of a comparative schools total fees. Because we are a not for profit organization, 50% of a normal school?s fees will be sufficient to allow us to provide 100% of the education. So, we don?t see a stability or sustainability problem.

The average cost $ child/year will be $40 when all the classes are operating (up to Grade V).

  11. Other sources of funding (confirmed and anticipated), if any:

  12. So far we haven?t taken any funds from outside. We will definitely ask for donations funds from our friends, family and acquaintances for the construction of the school.

  13. Proposed means of continuing the project after current funding (specially maintenance of structures being built):
  1. To what purpose would the requested funds be directed? An itemized split up of costs: blackboards, chalks, tables, chairs, toilets, buildings, teachers' salaries etc.
  1. Will Asha-Stanford be able to specify where the allocated funds should go?
Yes. On Asha?s contribution.

Project Schedule
  1. Duration of the Project:

  2. The building construction will take about 6 months to a year, depending upon the availability of funds. We plan finalize the purchase of land in February and start construction some time in June 2001.

  3. Itemized description of the various phases in the project with their associated timelines. (There will be an evaluation at the end of each phase. Asha requires an update every 3 months):

  4. February 2001 to April 2001 - looking for land area in and around present school area & finalizing.

    June 2001 - Dec 2001 - Constructing the building

These are potential dates and the actual plan will be based on the availability of funds, etc. We may not need to complete construction the building immediately because currently we don?t have classes beyond Grade V. We expect to add one class every year and building construction can be planned accordingly.

Selvamani Palaniappan : Financial support from U.S

A.V. Ramanathan : Management of the complete project from India.
