Background:

The organization (Pratigya Prashikshan Sansthan) is starting the school on Asha-India’s suggestion as a long-term education program, and will be working in consultation with them:

Dear friends,

we are in touch with a woman social worker, Srimati Rajkumari Gandhi, from Ballia-Ghazipur area in U.P. for sometime now. She was introduced to us by Ragini Behen, a distinguished doctor-social worker and head of Banwasi Sewa Ashram of Sonebhadra, U.P. She has submitted a proposal to us for establishing a school. The original proposal was for five years but we are giving below the budget only for the first year. The reason for this is that we would like her to adopt the self-sufficiency idea and work with a tapering budget so that at the end of the fifth year her school can become financially self-reliant. We have to work with her to explain the idea and then work out the budgets for the subsequent years. Moreover, we would also like to see how the

project proceeds for the first year before making plans further. For now, we would like Asha chapters to consider the following project for funding and get it off the ground. We would be closely working with her to develop this school.

Sincerely,

Sandeep

Banwasi Sewa Ashram is not linked to RSS. The organization (rather, network of organizations) having a similar name 'Banwasi Kalyan Ashram' is an RSS outfit. But Banwasi Sewa Ashram is a gandhian organization and the head of the organization Dr. Ragini Prem is well know to us.

*Describe location, current conditions (number of schools, population):

"The  work area of the organisation, Barachavar block of Ghazipur District, is quite backward where 80% people are socially, educationally and economically deprived. Due to this they are forced to live life of poverty, landlessness and they depend on manual labour for their survival. They are forced to live a life of slavery and exploitation. Their migration for employment is certain because of year-round lack of employment at the regional level. There is nothing unusual about the geographical situation. There is no formal school in the work area which reflects in the lack of education and human values among the children of the area. Due to poverty the children have to work as child labourers. People are not capable of sending their children to far of places and feel insecure. They are not bothered about the education of the girl child.  The reason of poverty is lack of education, consciousness and also the lack of occupation. From  the point of view of the  work area and the demand of villagers priority has to be  given to running of a systematic vocational training school."
