Part I: Information about your group/organization

Please feel free to attach any additional sheets and/or information such as brochures, press reports etc.

1. Name of the organization requesting funds. *

Jeevan Daan Samiti

2. When was the organization established? *

3. Briefly describe the motivation for starting this organization and the history of your organization. *

4. Briefly describe the goals of your organization. *

5. Does your organization have any religious or political affiliation? If yes, please describe the type of affiliation and the reason for it. *

No

6. Briefly describe all the activities presently managed by your organization.

The organization has started addressing the following problems-

i) Economic problems of the Brick-kiln workers- The workers lead a nomadic life.  Most of them are dalits and they work 6 months in the brick kiln and 6 months they eke out a livelihood in their villages. The kilns are closed during the rainy days during which they remain unemployed. There is neither security nor any life insurance-if any worker dies then his widow and children have to eke out a miserable life.

ii) The plight of women workers-Women work alongside their men folk at the brick kilns in addition to taking care of their children and family. Sometimes they have to tie their 2-3 month child on their backs and carry on working at the kilns.  The problems faced by pregnant women are even more severe. They have to continue working at the kilns till the last days. They do not get to eat nutritious food and there are no medical facilities available due to which they often end up losing their lives. Most of the workers are illiterate and can not manage their finances.

iii) The plight of the children-As both the parents work at the brick kilns, the children are left unsupervised. They play with the ashes and unbaked bricks. Children between the ages of 5-10 go out to hunt for birds, rats, and fish. They also take the goats and pigs out for grazing. Children over 10 years start working at the brick kilns alongside their parents. In addition they also work at other places. 25-30 children can be found roaming around in every kiln. The girls fare even worse. Girls between 5-10 years can be found doing all the household chores.

These children become addicted to tobacco and beedi at a very young age. Sometimes they consume ganja also. The parents want their sons to start earning a livelihood so that he can contribute to the family income. Child marriage is very common. As these people do not have land they can not earn a living through farming With great difficulty they manage to earn enough for their daily food. Some people make plates out of leaves but with companies entering into this business, this avenue for earning a living is also slowly closing.

iv) Environmental problems- The brick kiln owner establishes his kiln wherever he pleases violating the environmental laws. The govt. gives them the license to establish the kiln but does not check where the kiln is going to be established. The smoke emanating from these kilns causes air pollution and also the temperature of the area increases due to the heat of the kiln. The land slowly becomes infertile and crops can not be grown successfully.  Those farmers who have less land are the ones who have to bear the maximum loss and they have to sell off their land to the brick kiln owners. The environment is greatly affected by the brick kilns.

7. Does your organization have FCRA clearance from the Indian government? This is required for you to receive foreign funds. *

Yes. Jeevan Daan Samiti has been registered under the 1860 society act.  Registration No. 839/V.23801

Part II: Details about your educational project/s

8a. In short, describe the project - *

The samiti runs three educational centers. The first one, a balwadi,  is situated in Hiradarpur Mus-haar village (Saidpur Tehsil, Sadaat Block, Rajapur Gramsabha). About 60-70 children, whose ages range from 3-12, attend this center.  These children attend the center from the beginning of the monsoon to the end of November.

In December, their parents go to the brick kilns in search of jobs. The people who work as the farms as laborers remain back in the village. Most of the families build huts near the brick kilns where they have found jobs and start living there, which results in disruption of education of their children. Seeing this problem, we started teaching the children living near Shri Ram Yadav’s brick kiln. About 15-20 children attend the classes. There are other brick kilns around Shri Ram Yadav’s brick kiln and we have started a new center there also. We are expecting more children to join the classes.

The third center has been established at the brick kiln owned by Santraj Yadav.  About 20-25 children attend this center.

All centers run for two hours. Except for the Balwadi the other centers are run only for 3 days of the week because the organization does not have many teachers. The Balwadi runs for 31/2 hours from the start of the monsoon season to the end of December.

We need-

1) Two teachers-this will help us in running the brick kiln centers on a daily basis

2) One supervisor who can coordinate all the activities

3) Teaching aids-slates, pencil, notebooks, books, story books which will impart knowledge and be fun to read as well, inkpot, a durrie for the children to sit on, toffees for distribution amongst the children, materials for art work (colours, chart paper), for children’s hygine oil-soap etc. Play/sports materials-for the smaller children educational toys and for the older children football, cricket items, carom board, ludo etc.

4) First aid kit/medical supplies

5) Sewing machine and sewing supplies so that we can open a sewing center in the village.  Also a teacher who can teach sewing.

6) Arrange an annual picnic/outing for the children

7) To educate the people about the environment and about the importance of literacy. (on 5th June 2002, we plan to organize a bicycle tour from Gazipur to Rajghat (Delhi) on the occasion of the World Environment Day).

8)To publish a biannual magazine for the laborers and the children

9) Office supplies like register, audit etc.

8b. List the projects run by your group, and their locations with the training provided. If you are requesting funds for only a few of several projects, please specify which one/s. *

See above 8a

9. Specify the type of education provided (e.g. basic literacy, vocational training etc.). (For education related projects only)*

basic literacy

10. Please tell us about your teaching techniques (conventional vs. alternative). *

The organization lacks educational and teaching aids. Children are taught to write on the sand and if any old slate is available then that is used. Children’s books are distributed on August 15th so that children can practice reading at home. We do not have any teaching aids for children which can help in imparting knowledge by playway method.  We regularly distribute sweets amongst children.

We organize a Jeevan Daan festival annually. Children and their parents participate and they sing folksongs. We also organize functions on world literacy day, world environment day, children’s day, Gandhi Jayanti etc.

We have started a

11. What is the literacy rate in your local community? What are the challenges facing 100% literacy rate? (For basic education related projects only)*

The literacy rate is very low. Most of the parents are illiterate and the children themselves do not attend any schools. The problem is aggravated by the fact that these people lead a nomadic life-they work at the brick kilns for six months of the year and the rest of the time they go to their villages and try to find some employment there.

12. Describe the socio-economic background of the students and their parents (e.g. education, occupational). *

The parents work at the Brick Kilns from December to start of the monsoon season. The rest of the time the labor in farms or try to find some other employment. The children also work at the brick kilns or find some other employment to add to the family income.  Child marriages are common.

13a. What are the admission criteria for the students to join your school?

No criteria

13b. How many students attend your school currently? What is your boy: girl ratio?

At the Balwadi 60-70 children attend

At the center located at Shri Ram Yadav’s kiln 15-20 children attend

At the center located at Santraj Yadav’s kiln 20-25 children attend

The boy: girl ratio has not been specified

13c.What is the age group of children attending your facility?

The ages range from 3 to 12 years.

13d.What is your teacher: student ratio? (For education related projects only)*

Only one teacher is currently teaching.

(This was not clearly specified in the proposal but from what I understood from talking to Vishvesh Kumar was that he is the only teacher. He bicycles to the Balwadi in the morning and teaches the children. Then in the evening he bicycles to one of the brick kiln center and teaches there. Which is why currently the Balwadi runs every day but the centers at the brick kilns run for only 3 days of the week,)

14. In addition to education, does your group provide any other services to the students in your schools (e.g. food, health care, clothing, etc.)? *

Not at present

15. How do you perceive that education will improve the lives of the children in your village?

16. What Infrastructure does your Institute have (buildings, teaching aids, etc.): *

None

17. How many staff members are employed at your Institutes? Please specify the number of teachers and their qualifications. *

18. Please answer this if your institute has existed for at least 5 years. How many students have gone through your program in the past five years and what are they doing currently? Please tell us about their future education possibilities (if applicable). How would you visualize their future employment possibilities?

19. Do you help your students with their future education efforts after they have passed out of your    Institute? If so please describe your efforts.

20. Why are the children in your school/s or institute/s not attending government/other schools in the local area?

The children are employed at the brick kilns or at some other place to augment the family income. Girls have to look after their younger siblings and also take care of the home since their mother is also employed at the brick kilns. In addition they migrate back and forth between their villages and the brick kilns. And on top of it is the problem of Child marriage.

21. Any additional details you would like to provide to us.
