Institute of Social Work formed in 1978 by a group of
young, enthusiastic and dedicated social workers. The aims of this
organization is to serve for the betterment and the upliftment of
the social condition of the poor and neglected section of our
society especially the women who have always been the oppressed ones
in our society. Our work is mainly concentrated in the rural areas
of West Bengal and in the slums of Calcutta. |

Working for two decades
The Institute of Social Work is yet to complete its journey for two decades in
pursuit of justice for the 'down-trodden' - the women of rural and slum areas.
ISW realises that if the totally exploited population is to be changed, then
that has to be done in such a way so that the background in which they live
can be changed, too; i.e. the family situation and the community environment.

Temporary Shelter For Women |
|
Violence against women are viewed as
one of the most crucial social phenomenon by which they are
deliberately forced to mere subordinates. It is an undeniable
manifestation of our present and past society which once demanded

discrimination of sex. Thus, our institute is hoping to set up a
temporary shelter for women in near future. But, at present, since
her funds are not adequate, the organisation lacks its
implementation. |

and tolerate all this but human minds are unpredictable. Whenever
she protested, he used to beat her violently by bricks, sometimes
denying food and shelter. There have been days when he had locked
her up for the whole day without any food or drink........

It is our belief that the ultimate goal
of development is to offer people (esp. poor) choices-alternate ways
and means to improve their state of well being. Development means
that the people (esp. poor) themselves should decide how they want
to improve their status in terms of development programmes. It means
the poor should be involved in planning and implementation with
decision making. If this does not happen then whole process of
development is bound to fail in the long run. As such, in all the
time projects, Institute of Social Work has stressed upon the need
to build self-reliance. Community in their context and access
resources to solve the problems, their environment. |
