In the budget I wrote, 75% is for honorarium, and 25% is for expenses such as rent, electricity, phone, travel.  We cannot ask for honorarium expenses from local donors.  But we can get expenses such as play material, notebooks, cupboards, office supplies covered through donations from them.  We are seeing some small victories in that now.  We have put together 5 programs as part of the trust.  The basic philosophy of the five plans is to join together as groups and meet the needs of the people as much as possible. We are requesting Rs. 1000 honorarium for the following reasons: (1) family situation (2) a desire to volunteer (3) difficulties inherent in this work with children (4) the time they spend and (5) the educational expenses they have for their own education.

In the last 9 months, this is what I have done for these 10 youth

(1)   I got bank account books for 7 people, started a savings deposit with Rs. 500 for them using help from my professor.

(2)   Helped and encouraged 4 people to get admission to college

(3)   Helped 4 people take the class 12 exams as private candidates

(4)   Helped get 2 wheeler driver’s licenses for two people and 4 wheeler driver’s licenses for 2 people.

They will work with us to do social service in Karumbalai and in other places with encouragement and support from us.  The Rs. 1000 honorarium will be a big help in this direction.

Current and past three months’ work of Vaandugal Arangam (after school student study center for primary school children)

The plan for Vaandugal Arangam for primary school children was started in a small room with 40 children.  Now it has grown to 60 children and another room has been rented (note – in recent phone conversations I understand that this number has grown 90).  What is needed is a rent, fan, blackboard and electricity.  Some of the needs are met with the help of Karthi’s friends and the teachers of his school.  The children deposit Rs. 1 or 50 paisa in the savings box of Vaandugal Arangam.  This money is used for phone, postage, visitors, chalkpiece, paper etc.  The children are maintaining a fish tank and five flower pots.  Through friends two cupboards, two clocks, two carom boards and traditional games (thyam, pallanguzhi, snake and ladder) for Rs. 3000.  Everyday five people teach five classes.

The arrangement is such that the children will shape Vaandugal Arangam according to their wishes.  It will be open from 9.00am to 8.00pm.  In the addition to the school lessons, the children will be taught songs, mental arithmetic, memorization practice, games and dance.

Senthamizh Noolakam (Library)

Slogan: Reading is wealth

Karthi has donated 500 books.  Mrs. Amutha Rajsekar, a member of the Seed trust board, has permitted us to use the upstairs of her house at a subsidized rent (note – I think this is for younger children).  Soon a building will be constructed and the library will be used by all in Karumbalai (note – I think this will have to be a distant future plan).  At present Karthi’s room is used as the library for college and higher secondary students.

We plan to collect 5000 books in the summer from the public as book donations.
