Yadavji's new phone number: 9268773901 School timings: 1:30 - 2:00: exercise 2:00 - 5:30: classes with some break in the middle 16 children already mainstreamed to VMP high school: They had previous basic knowledge. Humana's community mobilizers talked to VMP headmaster and children's parents and convinced them they these children were ready to attend regular school and education would really help the children. Humana even got a discount for these children - Rs 50 per month instead of regular Rs 70. Some of them got admitted in class 1st, others in class 2nd and the rest in class 3rd. They got another health checkup done in december. Mobilized a doctor from the area. He didn't take fees. Children were suffering from tapeworms, cold, cough etc. Medicines have been given to the affected. They are thinking of having the next checkup done earlier since this is the season when children need it the most. Probably end of January. A few weeks backs the number of children had settled to 45 regular kids. Some families moved to a near by slum and CMs got 10 children enrolled from there - so 55 children right now - 30 girls and 25 boys. Attendence varies from 55 to 47 or so.. rarely below 80%. The community moblizers' (CM) efforts to involve the community in the process seem to be paying off. Parents come regularly to parent teacher meetings. Either the father or the mother makes it depending on their work shifts. If none of them makes it then CMs visit them in the evenings to tell them about their child. Concern India foundation (http://www.concernindia.org/) Is holding a Sports Day in Gurgaon in January. Humana plans to take a few children from Maharajpur and Kadkadmodal schools. Children can take part in some sports events, can win prizes and will also be getting some donations in the form of warm clothes, shoes etc. Humana has also devised a new 10 step new curriculum. Instead of year long courses, the curriculum of Classes 1st, 2nd and 3rd are divided into these 10 steps. Each step takes a week to to be taught and absorbed. It works something like this: 30 introduction by the teacher 30 mins teaching 30 mins of group activity (class divided into groups of 4-5 kids) 10 mins rest Followed by same cycle. Children are taught Mon to Fri They are then tested on Sat. The ones who pass the exam move onto next level. After clearing all 10 steps they can get admitted to class 4th.
