Purpose:
"Asha for Education" can be a source of hope to any child in India in need of support.   To make this a reality, the organisation needs to have a presence in every region of the country and be accessible to the community and the child.  Asha Stars Projects by involving the community at large can be this source of hope.  That is why we need to try and make sure that Asha Stars Projects are operating in every part of the country.  But we need to make a start. Here are proposed targets to reach this goal. (back to top)

Long Term Target (May 2010):
At least one Asha Star project in each of the more than 563 districts in India
(back to top)

Short-term Target (May 2005):
(i) Each region has set up short term targets for the next two years (in time for the 2005 conference).

Table to be added.

(ii) Initiate Asha Star participation from within India

What We Need To Do To Get There
To achieve the above goals while simultaneously keeping up the high quality of the Asha Stars Projects, the two key areas of responsibilities identified are -
I) Project solicitation and administration; and
II) Project monitoring and publicity

I) Project solicitation and administration (PS&A):
Identify 10 regions in the country (suggested division appears in the table below) and implement worthy Asha Stars projects in each district of the region.
Each region will have a team headed by a co-ordinator who will:

(i) Work with Asha members in India and other volunteers to look for good sustainable projects in those regions
(ii) Interact with ethnic and other Indian organisations to look for Asha Stars
(iii) Write to political and administrative representatives in the regions to solicit good projects (work with estabilshed NGOs and the government, if necessary).
(iv)  Match Individual Asha Stars and projects in their respective region of ownership.

In regions where we already have Asha Stars Projects, the attempt should be to get projects from different distinct geographical parts of the state (e.g.. in Andhra Pradesh, we should try and get projects from Telangana, Rayalseema as well as the coastal regions).

II) Project monitoring and publicity (the web team):
Volunteers will be involved in creating infrastructure for implementing the Asha Stars Projects and facilitating their monitoring.

Some suggested facilities that need to be built are:

  • An up-to-date web-page with maps of the /regions states with district, showing the existing projects
  • List of new projects that is looking for Asha Stars
  • List of prospective Asha Stars who have expressed interest
  • Develop and maintain list of web resources for each region of the country that will be useful for implementing Asha Stars projects
  • Develop and maintain list of cultural and social organisations and their contacts pertaining to the different regions
