Current Project(s)

Arushi, Bhopal

Arushi - meaning "the first ray of sun" - strives to integrate people with disabilities into the mainstream of society.

In 1992, five like-minded friends came together and started working for issues concerned with Environmental Protection. The focus of their efforts shifted towards “people with visual impairment” and they started recording study material for them on audiocassettes. This was a genuinely felt need and eventually their empowerment and integration into the mainstream became the focus. This pulled a number of volunteers into its fold. Over the years the organization has evolved and has broad based its activities to address possible issues related with disability.

Project Mother, TamilNadu

The Mother project aims to actively improve the quality of education and life in rural areas of Chennai, which includes 20 villages in a 45 km radius. The project provides academic support and teaches spiritual and social values to under-privileged children. Centralized classes and exams, meditation camps and science tours are conducted in order to prepare children for public exams thereby leading to better career opportunities. In addition, medical camps are organized in otherwise neglected rural communities.  Click here for details.

Previous Projects

Project Savali, Maharashtra

Based in Amalner district in Maharashtra, this project is an effort by Drs. Asha and Kuber Vaidya to help mentally challenged children. Mamata Vidyalaya set up in 1981, is registered under the Societies Registration Act and Public Trust Act and presently has strength of 50 students. Though this school is fully supported by the Maharashtra State Government, the government only considers children below the age of 18 to be eligible for school benefits. Through Project Savali, the Vaidyas intend to train these mentally challenged and economically backward children in various agricultural activities so that they can become independent and productive members of their family and the society.

The school trust has purchased 6 acres of land where 25 students (above the age of 18) have already started cultivating crops. Each student has been allotted one or more plants whose maintenance is essentially their responsibility. The earnings generated from selling the crops will be given to the students involved.

Asha Salt Lake City intends to help Mamata Vidyalaya establish a self-sufficient farming system which requires a one time set-up cost of approximately $5000 for essentials such as a well, an irrigation system, farming tools and some basic medical equipment.

Project Ashraya, Karnataka

Ashraya is a charitable trust registered with the Government of Karnataka.
Established by Ms. Leela Deshpande, Ashraya aims to provide food, clothing, shelter and education to physically and mentally challenged children rescued off the streets of
Bangalore.
The project is based out of Ms.Deshpande's home, where many of these children also live.
Ms.Deshpande also administers a school for these children's education and organizes medical care for them.

Asha Salt Lake City is focusing on Project Ashraya as part of 'Support a Child' program, a first of its kind from this chapter. The Support a Child program makes it possible for an individual to sponsor the cost of education or total living expenses for one underprivileged child in Ashraya. The aim is to support this child financially till he or she completes college or vocational education.
